Food Medicine Series 2018
All food is medicine. Our ancestors mixed their remedies and cast their spells in every dish we enjoy today. Some of their secrets were whispered into our grandmothers, mother's ears, some were to be held in the food, because colonization forbid sharing. Our food remembers.
In our Food Medicine Series we will be traveling into the magick of our food, the nourishing minerals, the healing properties and our remembrance. Each workshop will be highlighting the food medicine from our black, indigenous + students of color in our herbal + ancestor veneration apprenticeship. We will commune in our homes, because ancestor would not want it any other way.
Offerings:
-Cocina Criolla: Puerto Rican cooking from the diaspora w/Jasmine Gomez
-Sancocho Dominicano w/ Taina Vargas
-Fermented Foods: Ancient Germination Practices w/bellx
-Kitchen of the Orisha: Using the food of our ancestors to heal the heart and sacral chakras w/ Kea'nia Gulley

Cocina Criolla: Puerto Rican Cooking in the Diaspora w/Jasmine Gomez
This workshop brings together traditional Puerto Rican recipes with a twist from the diaspora. Puerto Rican food is comes from a mix of cultures - African, Taino and Spanish. In this workshop, we will explore how our food is shaped by all of these roots. We will learn how to make achiote (annatto) oil, adobo + sazon dry seasoning mix, and sofrito for the base of our meals. Using those ingredients, we will then collectively learn about and create traditional Puerto Rican dishes such as arroz con gandules, pollo guisado, yuca fritas, platanos, y guineos en escabeche to share. |
Sancocho Dominicano w/ Taina Vargas-Sosa
Sancocho is a hearty meat and vegetable stew traditional to many Spanish-speaking countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. The ingredients (including the type and amount of meat) used to make sancocho vary from country to country, and even regions within a country. In the Dominican Republic, sancocho is eaten in community (during the holidays and on weekend get-togethers). Sancocho is one of the first foods given to women after given birth, and some people even swear it’s a cure-all for hangovers. Sancochos are dense in nutrients and are great for cold winter months. |
